| AM workouts are great- you wake up with nothing in your stomach, and any calorie burning you do right away is coming out of your fat stores automatically, as opposed to burning whatever you ate that day if you workout in the evening. Also, AM workouts raise your body's overall metabolism, so you continue to burn more calories throughout the day. If you workout at night you're still upping your metabolism, but you miss out on the all day effect because once you go to sleep your metabolism slows down. Another benefit is that you are much less likely to cop out on a workout if you go first thing in the morning (lots of excuses pop up in the afternoon). Plus you get to wake up while you're in the gym and you just feel good all day long. ![]() |

| Whether you exercise in the morning or the evening, you're burning the same number of calories. But exercising in the a.m. does give your metabolism an extra boost — helping it stay revved and burning calories — throughout the day. While exercising in the evening still burns a great number of calories, your metabolism naturally slows as your body prepares for sleep. Plus, a big aerobic workout can keep you awake for up to three hours after you're done. (It's generally recommended that you do lighter workouts in the evening.) Another thing to consider is the importance of keeping a consistent workout schedule, since you're more likely to get it done if it's something you always do at a specific time. Exercising in the morning seems to be the most convenient time for people, especially women, since there's always something in the evening to keep them from their workout. Make sure to get up a half hour early five days a week to make time for exercise. Remember, though, that in order for a morning workout to be successful, you need to get eight hours of sleep. Still, if after trying an early workout, you find your body rhythms are much better later in the day, it's probably a better idea to exercise whenever you feel good enough to do it. ![]()
